Sounds like a simple enough question, right? Don’t be fooled! A Rubik’s cube also seems simple on first glance – and I still can’t complete one of those.

In a not too distant past, here at Hive we undertook a development day designed to focus our purpose. This day was supposed to drill down to the very core of what we provide, who for, and ultimately why we choose to do this.

On the surface, this seems like it would be a pretty straightforward solution. All the standard answers come to mind – to help our clients, to make money, to grow the business. But following a couple hours of strenuous mental digging, we had something akin to enlightenment. Wade through all the usual corporate jargon about what a business should be, and you come across a shared ethos which rings true with the entire organisation. Something that unites.

If you can find this message, you’ve struck gold.

Which got me thinking, does everyone else truly understand why they do what they do? And do your team share this opinion?

In dentistry, you’re likely to meet people from all walks of life. And I’m not just talking about the clients you get through your door, this includes your associates, managers and practice team. Is everyone in your practice aware of why the business does what it does?

I’m aware I’m now starting to sound like an inspirational life coach who will flog you a selection of self-help books at the end of this blog – but stick with me. My point in the importance of this ethos is this – you can have the best practice in the world in technical terms. Location, patient list, whatever you want. But if your team aren’t invested in the ethos of the company, you’re likely to have a headache trying to fill your practice with a clinical team who care as much about the identity of your brand as you do. Which is why I ask again, why do you do what you do? Do you feel your team share your vision?

As I said, understanding the true motive of your business is never as straightforward as it may seem.
