If you are yet to pay your tax bill, don’t worry, there are a few ways you can still get your payment to HMRC on time.

It’s that time of year again, the dreaded ‘31st January’ deadline is just around the corner and there are thousands of people all around the UK rushing to file their tax returns on time. However, most do not realise that not only does their tax return need filing by 31st January deadline but if there is any tax due then this also needs to be paid and received by HMRC on the same date.

But do not fear, there is a multitude of ways that you can pay your tax bill with HMRC and it still reach them before the deadline.

Here are the top 3 speedy ways of paying your tax bill by 31 January 2016:

This is my preferred payment method as HMRC will accept payment on the date you make it and not the date it reaches your account, even on bank holidays and weekends. Handy to know if you tend to leave everything to the last minute.

Click this link and follow the steps as advised.

If using a credit card, there is a non-refundable 1.5% fee.

Transfer from your bank account by Faster Payment, CHAPS or Bacs using the following account details:

Account Name Account Number // Sort Code

HMRC Cumbernauld 12001039 // 08-32-10

HMRC Shipley 12001020 // 08-32-10

Your bill will tell you which account to pay but if you do not have a bill or are unsure then use HMRC Cumbernauld.

Faster payments and CHAPS are usually received by HMRC on the same day and Bacs normally takes around 3 working days.

To pay at your bank, building society or post office you will still need to receive paper statements from HMRC and also have your paying slip that HMRC would have sent you. If you do not meet these criteria then you will have to pay via another method.

HMRC will accept the payment the day you make it and not the day they receive it in their account (as long as it is made Monday –Friday).

For all of the above, you will need to have your 10 digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (followed by the letter ‘K’). This can be found in your HMRC online account or your payslip sent from HMRC.

There are other not so speedy methods but, as the deadline is fast approaching, these are not the best options:

  • Direct Debit
  • Budget Payment Plan
  • Cheque through the post
