It used to be the case that an SSL certificate was only necessary if you retailed through your website. However, website security is more important than ever and in recent months we’ve seen quite a few successful hacks on dental websites.

You might be wondering if you should make the switch or you’re not sure where to start. Here is what you need to know about making your website secure:

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is the standard security technology for creating an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the two remain private.

What are the benefits of HTTPS?

Google now rewards websites that make the switch to having encryption in place and has even started flagging websites as ‘potentially dangerous’ that accept sensitive information such as credit/ debit card details but do not offer the data encryption that HTTPS offers.

If your website is encrypted with HTTPS you may start ranking higher than websites that do not offer it, helping you to be found for terms and phrases related to your practice.

Why has Google decided to do this?

Google is constantly striving to protect users from malicious websites, whilst also serving the best search results. Google’s aim is to get website owners to secure their site to help reduce spam bots, spyware and other malicious software.

How can I tell if my website is using HTTPS?

If your website URL contains the letter “s” before the colon then your website is secure.

If you are using Firefox and Chrome as your web browser you will also see a green padlock displayed before your URL to signify encryption.

Will an SSL certificate really make my website secure?

Having an SSL certificate is simply one way to secure your website. It ensures that all website content is encrypted and makes it less likely that the private and sensitive information patients may send you when filling out a contact form will be intercepted by third parties, including hackers.

So does it guarantee this? No, unfortunately not. There are still ways sensitive data can be stolen; however, it does make it a lot harder to do so.

Other elements that will help:

• Ensuring you have secure passwords for logging in to your site.
• Selecting a good hosting provider with robust security measures.[/x_accordion_item]
