You’re Too Clever By Half – Dunning-Kruger
The danger is that our confidence can sometimes outrun our competence.

What does lemon juice, a bank robbery and running a dental practice have in common?

It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but there’s actually a serious lesson behind it.

In 1995, a man robbed a bank without wearing a mask because he genuinely believed that rubbing lemon juice on his face would make him invisible to security cameras. He wasn’t trying to be reckless. He genuinely believed his idea would work.

And that’s where the Dunning-Kruger effect comes in.

As dentists, you’re highly trained experts in your clinical field. But does that expertise automatically make you an expert in practice finance, marketing, sales, HR, business strategy or practice sales?

Of course not.

And the same applies to all of us.

I’m an accountant, so I’m very comfortable with numbers. But that doesn’t make me a marketing expert. Being good at one discipline doesn’t automatically translate into expertise in another.

The danger is that our confidence can sometimes outrun our competence.

In this video, I explore why this matters so much for dental practices, particularly in the current economic environment, and why bringing in the right expert at the right time can make a significant difference.

At Hive, we work exclusively with dentists and currently support around 400 practices across the UK. We believe the strongest outcomes often come from combining different areas of expertise rather than trying to do everything ourselves.

Sometimes that means bringing in an external marketing specialist.

Sometimes it’s a financial expert.

And sometimes, when the time is right, it’s an expert broker to ensure a practice sale achieves the very best possible outcome.

Those marginal gains can ultimately add up to five or even six figures.

Most importantly, it’s about putting ego and overconfidence to one side and asking:

“What would give this practice the best possible outcome?”

If you’d value an independent perspective on your practice, I’d be very happy to have a conversation.
